Frequently Asked QuestionsFrequently Asked Questions

Who can attend?
Anyone who is a competent intermediate to advanced skier over 16 years of age.

Do I have to be a good skier?
You must be able to ski at an intermediate level or higher. For example, participants must be able to ski in a basic parallel at all times on blue runs.

What is the level of certification?
The Austrian Level 1 Ski Instructor Certification - formerly the Austrian Anwärter Schilehrer Certification - is an Austrian Government qualification universally accepted as a comprehensive course. It is equivalent to the Australian Professional Snowsports Instructors (APSI) Level 1. With this certification you are able to teach skiing to adults and children at a beginner to intermediate level. SLAP training equips candidates with the skiing, teaching and language skills to succeed.

On completion of this certification, full-time employees of an Australian snow sports school can train for the APSI Level Two (Internationally recognised teaching standard) and are eligible for the second language prerequisite of the International Ski Instructors Alliance (ISIA).

Can I work as a ski instructor?
SLAP graduates can start instructing for Australian snow sports schools after gaining a position and joining the Australian Professional Snowsports Instructors Association (APSI).

Does SLAP fit in with my Uni studies?
The SLAP course is offered in the Australian university summer holiday break from 9 - 28 January, 2012. Many SLAP graduates study full time at university and work part time as a ski instructor. Many Australian snow sports schools can offer employment full-time, in university holidays or on weekends in return for a minimum level of teaching commitment.

Can I work in Austria or elsewhere overseas as a ski instructor?
If you have a European Union (EU) passport or right to work in the EU, SLAP can assist you with work experience and work placements in Austrian resorts. SLAP cannot assist you with work permits or visas if you do not already hold a EU passport or the right to work in other overseas countries.

What if I am a snowboarder?
SLAP specialises in ski instructor certification. Instructor training programs for those interested in becoming a snowboard instructor are offered by a number of snow sports schools in Australia.
